why does it so often take political writers a long, long time to catch up with what the public are saying?

for many years, my friends and i have been lamenting the fact that there is no difference between 'new' labour and the tories: that all 'new' labour policies are tory policies, that 'new' labour politicians behave and sound like tory politicians, that 'new' labour cannot be distinguished from the tory party by anything other than its name.

paul foot seems to have only just noticed it.
